Druk Path Trek

This 4 nights 5 days Druk Path Trek is one of the finest short and most popular treks in Bhutan. Leading through an ancient trading route, over high mountain passes, which connects the valleys of Paro and Thimpu. Trail passes through spectacular rhododendron forests, alpine yak pastures and beautiful lakes stocked with snowy mountain routs. Druk path trek is also very easy trek as the distance between every campsite is fairly short.

This trek also offers trekkers the stunning views of Mt. Jomolhari (7314 mtrs) and Gangkar Puensum (7654 mtrs), the highest unclimbed peak in the world. The best times to embark on the Druk Path Trek are between March-April and September-November.

Day 1. Arrive in Paro and Sightseeing around. Hotel or Resort.

Day 2. Paro Sightseeing (Hike to Tiger’s Nest). Hotel or Resort.

Day 3. Paro – Jele Dzong (tent).

Day 4. Jele Dzong – Tshokam (tent).

Day 5. Tshokam – Jigmelangtsho (tent).

Day 6. Jigmelangtsho – Phajoding (tent).

Day 7. Phajoding -- Thimphu. Hotel or Resort.

Day 8. Thimphu Sightseeing. Hotel or Resort.

Day 9. Departure.

Day 01. Arrive at Paro (2280 meters): You will be received by the Representative from Isolated Bhutan Travels at the airport and drive you to the hotel.

After lunch, visit the Ta dzong, an ancient watchtower, which was built in 1656 and renovated in 1968 and converted into a National Museum of Bhutan, then visit Rimpung Dzong (Paro Dzong) built in 1646 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. The Dzong presently houses administrative offices of Paro District and Monastery.  Paro Rimpung Dzong

Day 02. Paro Sightseeing : (2280 meters):  After breakfast, an excursion to Tiger’s Nest Monastery: A short drive of around 25 minutes from main town of paro takes you to satsam chorten, the trail climbs through beautiful pine forest, many of the trees festooned with Spanish moss, and an occasional grove of fluttering prayer flags. We stop for a rest and have tea with cookies at Taktsang cafeteria and then walk a short distance until we see, clearly and seemingly within reach, Tiger’s Nest monastery. The history dates back from 8th century when guru Rinpochhe, a tantric master flew to this place on a back of a flying tiger, said to be his favorite Tibetan consort known as khandu Yeshey Chogyal and meditated in a cave nearby, but the temple was just built in 17th century by the penlop (governer) of paro Gyaltse Tenzin Rbgey; this incredible monastery clings to the edge of a sheer rock cliff that plunges 600 meters into the valley below.

After lunch, visit the Drukgyel Dzong, which was built in 1644 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to commemorate the victory over the Tibetan invaders but now it is just the ruins because the dzong was complectly burned down by the fire caused by butter lamp in 1951, the dzong name Drukgyel  means indeed “ victorious Druk “. The Dzong was used as an administrative center until 1951. Then visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest Buddist temple which was built in 659 AD by a Tibetan king Tshongchen Gyampo. Day 03. Paro – Jele Dzong:

Distance 7 km, 4-5 hours, 1090 m ascent, camp altitude 3480 m.

Today is the first day of your trek, which starts from Ta Dzong (National Museum) where you need to climb till the camp site through blue pine forest in Paro. The trek follows a gravel road past a few farms for about 30 minutes before you starts your real trek. Once you reach the ridge below Jele Dzong you descend about 100m to the campsite below the Dzong.

Day 04. Jele Dzong – Tshokam:  

Distance 10 km, 4-5 hours, 310 m ascent, 50 m descent, camp altitude 3770 m.

You begin with a steep climb for about 20minutes then the slope evens a bit and the ascent is more gradual. Today you will enjoy your walk a lot because today you have every kinds of walk ascent, descent, and flat with a good view of snow cape mountains if the weather is clear. The trail takes you through thick alpine forests and dwarf rhododendron tress. You may see yak herders and their yaks around your campsite.

Day 05. Tshokam – Jimelangtsho:

Distance 11 km, 5-6 hours, 230 m descent, 330 m ascent, camp altitude 3870 m.

The trail follows a ridge and on a clear day the view of the mountains and valley are simply stunning. The campsite is close to the Jimgelang Tsho Lake. This lake is known for its giant sized trout. And if you are lucky you will get chance to get the test of the trout.

Day 06. Jigmelangtsho -- Phajoding:  

Distance 15 km, 5-6 hours, 820 m ascent, 400 m descent, camp altitude 4110 m.

The trail takes you through dwarf rhododendron trees and past Janetso Lake. You may come across some yak herder camps where you will have the opportunity to get a glimpse of a nomad’s life. If the weather in far distance is clear you will also get a chance to see a good view of Mt. Gangkar Puensum Mountain 7654 m (highest snow cape mountain of Bhutan). The campsite for today will be at the good view of Thimphu city.

Day 07. Phajoding - Thimphu: (2350 meters):  

Distance 7 km, 2-3 hours, 680 m descent, camp altitude 2900 m.

Today is the last day of your trek where you need to only decent down to Thimphu city. After lunch you can relax in the hotel and walk around the city in the evening.

Day 08. Thimphu Sightseeing (2350 meters): After breakfast drive to Thimphu, and while in thimphu visit National Memorial Chorten, which was built in 1974 by the mother of our third king in the memory of third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. The paintings and statues in the temple are dedicated to the third king, Then visit the tallest statue of Buddha (In the world) which is of 51 meters tall,

After that visit Mini Zoo where you will get chance to see our National Animal Takin and then finally visit Tashichhoe Dzong and stroll around Thimphu City for shopping.

Day 09. Departure: Early morning, drive to paro Airport and Farewell.
